A Symmetry-Oriented Approach to Intraframe Image Coding

Abstract This paper presents two novel second-generation intraframe image coding techniques which use symmetry to reduce redundancy. The first method is a block-based one. The second technique is segmentation-based. Luminance representation and coding strategy are defined for both of them. Simulation results are shown for natural test images. In the first technique, blocking effects are visible for high compression, whereas the segmentation-based method outperforms more classical second-generation image coding techniques in terms of visual quality.
