H∞ and LMI attitude control design: towards performances and robustness enhancement

Abstract This paper presents a general approach for controller design for systems with large flexible appendages. Based on the H∞/LMI (Linear Matrix Inequality) framework, the proposed methodological guidelines allow to select an appropriate design strategy associated with its resolution technique. A powerful computer tool based on matlab allow to simplify the procedure. The results have been successfully applied during phase A studies of the Mars Sample Return project for the delicate Rendez-Vous mode, and allowed to design fully compliant control laws.
