Effect of Boron Carbide Powder Mixed into Dielectric Fluid on Electrical Discharge Machining of Titanium Alloy

Abstract Titanium alloys (Ti-6Al-4 V) are extensively used in aerospace applications because of their excellent material properties such as high strength to weight ratio, corrosion resistance, and fracture resistance. It is observed that cutting and machining of such materials is difficult and which involves high tooling cost. The present work gives an experimental approach to evaluate material removal rate, surface roughness and tool wear rate for Electrical Discharge Machining of Ti-6Al-4 V. In this process B4C powder is added into the dielectric fluid in various concentrations and effectiveness of this concentration has been studied. It has been observed that the addition of B4C powder in various concentrations has influenced the material removal rate, surface roughness and tool wear rate. The process has been well explored and the results have been discussed.
