Precision engineering issues in magnetic recording technology

Abstract In this paper, precision engineering issues in magnetic recording technology are investigated. Theoretical and experimental aspects of the head/medium interface are analysed from the point of view of maximizing linear density. Interferometric measurements and laser Doppler methods are discussed with respect to the measurement of key parameters of the head/medium interface. In addition, precision engineering issues which limit track density in discs and tapes are presented.
