The Nature and Description of Behavior Patterns

Confronted with the complex flux of phenomena that constitute the stream of behavior, the observer arrives at a verbal description by selecting information at several levels. To understand the process of selection we must come to grips with the nature of behavior patterns, which are the units of ethological science. In the analysis presented below behavior patterns are viewed as classes defined by regularities in one or more of five domains: location, orientation, physical topography, intrinsic properties, and physical effects. Although the describer selects domains, regularities within domains, and features of regularities, his descriptions are quite objective in a limited but important sense.
