COLLOCATIONS IN LANGUAGE LEARNING: CORPUS‐BASED AUTOMATIC COMPILATION OF COLLOCATIONS AND BILINGUAL COLLOCATION CONCORDANCER

Abstract While corpus‐based studies are becoming now a new methodology in natural language processing, second language learning seems to be an interesting potential application too. In this paper, we are primarily concerned with the acquisition of collocational knowledge from corpora to use it in the language learning process. We present an efficient method for extracting collocations from corpora which uses the cost criteria measure and a tree‐based data structure. We also propose a bilingual collocation concordancer, a tool that provides language learners with collocation correspondences between a native language and a foreign language. A language learner can refer to these concordance outputs during his/her language learning activities.
