THE INTERCHANGE AT THE PORTE DE BAGNOLET /IN FRENCH/

A FULL DESCRIPTION OF THE MULTI-PURPOSE INTERCHANGE IS GIVEN: MOTORWAY INTERCHANGE, INTERCHANGE PARKING AREA (BUILT IN THE CENTER OF THE INTERCHANGE), BUS TERMINUS, AND UNDERGROUND TERMINUS. ATTENTION IS DRAWN TO THE SPECIAL GEOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE SITE. THE NECESSITY OF BUILDING STATICALLY INDETERMINATE THIN SLAB CURVED BRIDGES SUPPORTED ON SKEW BEARINGS WAS EXPLAINED BY THE NARROW DIMENSIONS OF THE SITE AND THE POOR QUALITY OF THE SOIL. FOR CALCULATION PURPOSES, THE FOUNDATIONS WERE ASSUMED TO BE RESTING ON PERFECTLY ELASTIC SOIL. A NUMBER OF QUALITATIVE LAWS GOVERNING CURVED, SKEWED PLAIN, OR REINFORCED CONCRETE VIADUCTS IS PRESENTED. DETAILS ARE ALSO GIVEN OF THE PREFABRICATION AND PLACING OF THE JOISTS IN THE PARKING AREA, POSITIONING OF 120 M CABLES GOING THROUGH THE JOISTS, BRACING OF THE VIADUCTS, AND LOADING OF THE ARCHED RETAINING WALLS BY MEANS OF JACKS. SPECIAL MEASURES TAKEN ARE OUTLINED, E.G. PRECISION TOPOGRAPHIC MEASUREMENTS, CONTROL OF THE SETTLEMENT OF THE STRUCTURES, AND DEVELOPMENT OF HEAVY-DUTY SAFETY FENCES. /TRRL/
