Revised structure of the main alkaloid of senecio adonidifolius

Abstract The structure of the main pyrrolizidine alkaloid (adonifoline) from Senecio adonidifolius is determined by GC-MS and 1 H and 13 C NMR. 1 H-detected 2D long-range 1 H/ 13 C-shift correlation proves a pentacyclic structure with a 1,5-dioxa-spiro[2.5]octane subunit. This requires the revision of two previous structures claimed for adonifoline.
