Partial Spline Models for the Estimation of the Three Dimensional Atmospheric Temperature Distribution from Satellite Radiance Data and Tropopause Height Information

ABSTRACT A mathematical method, based on partial spline models, is developed for including specified discontinuities in otherwise smooth two and three dimensional objectve analyses. The method is appropriate for including tropopause height information in two and three dimensional temperature analyses, in conjunction with a physical variational method recently proposed by O'Sullivan and Wahba for analysis of satellite radiance data. To illustrate the nature of the discontinuities that may be included, a prototype two dimensional analysis based on simulated radiosonde and tropopause height data is shown. The method may also be appropriate for other geophysical problems, such as, modelling the ocean thermocline, fronts, etc. This research supported by NASA Contract NAG5–316 and NSF Grant ATM-8410373
