AN EVALUATION OF FUEL CONSUMPTION MODELS

Fuel consumption and driving pattern data collected in the Perth metropolitan area are used to evaluate standard fuel consumption models. The instantaneous extended power model yielded an average error of 7-8 percent on a link by link basis compared to errors of 10-11 percent for the 4 mode elemental model and the running speed model. A simple model developed by the local traffic authority performed with an average error of 12-13 percent and may prove for most uses to be sufficient. (Author/TRRL)
