HRTF and Sound Image Control for an Arbitrary Three-Dimensional Direction

Are HRTFs in any direction necessary to realize sound image control in any three-dimensional direction? This chapter discusses methods by which to control a sound image in an arbitrary direction using a limited number of HRTFs at sparse directions in three-dimensional space.
