Rigid-plastic modelling of blast-loaded stiffened plates—Part II: Partial end fixity, rate effects and two-way stiffened plates

Abstract A new rigid-plastic analysis of stiffened plates subjected to uniformly distributed blast loads is developed. In the first part of this two-part paper, one-way stiffened plates with clamped ends were modelled as singly symmetric beams, and an instantaneous mode solution to their response was obtained. In this, the second part of the paper, the instantaneous mode solution is extended to cover the cases of partial end fixity, material strain rate sensitivity, and two-way stiffening. The solution methods are applied to several examples of stiffened plates subjected to various blast-type pulses. Good agreement is obtained between the present results and those from elastic-plastic beam and plate finite element and finite strip solutions. Some success has also been achieved in comparison with experimental results.
