Recent advances and present limitations of the electromagnetic theory of diffraction gratings

A review is given on recent advances of grating theory in three areas: (1) S- and R-matrix algorithms, (2) Fourier factorization, and (3) parametric coordinate transformation, all aimedat improving numerical stability and convergence speed of grating analysis methods.
