This article provides concise information regarding integrated solid waste management (ISWM) of nonhazardous waste. The primary goal of ISWM is to minimize energy use, environmental impact, and landfill space use by maximizing reduction, reuse, and recycling (also known as “Three Rs”) of waste. Many communities and companies are adopting a new concept of “zero waste”, which is a philosophy grown out of concerns for global warming and sustainable development. The concept looks at overall picture of consumption and disposal. The article includes information regarding identification and characterization of various nonhazardous wastes generated in communities. Discussion regarding efficient collection system for various waste types, how to reduce their volume and toxicity, and waste disposal related issues are included.
