Development of prototype custom power devices for power quality enhancement

The paper addresses the all-important issues of design and construction of low-voltage, three-phase custom power equipment. Emphasis is placed on the control aspects of two-level and multilevel pulse-width modulated (PWM) voltage source inverter (VSI) based systems. The controlling software is embedded in a DSP board for maximum flexibility and reliability. The IGBT VSI can be made to operate as either a STATCOM or a dynamic voltage restorer (DVR). It is only the connection to the external circuit and controlling software that change between applications. A distinction is drawn between the circuitry and control algorithms required for two-level and multilevel VSIs. Experimental results presented show the prowess of the developed prototypes.
