Differences between lost-time and non-lost-time industrial accidents

Abstract Shannon, H.S. and Manning, D.P., 1980. Differences between lost-time and non-lost-time industrial accidents. Journal of Occupational Accidents , 2: 265–272. A popular view that the severity of an injury following an industrial accident is largely governed by chance is noted and examined by investigating differences between lost-time and non-lost-time accidents occurring in the transmission plant of a motor company. Data were “plotted” onto a conceptual model of an accident. The number of events and the separate components of the model were considered and they showed very different distributions for lost-time and non-lost-time accidents, contradicting the view noted above. A possible reconciliation is suggested.
