Strategies for the miniaturization of metamaterial resonators

In this article, different possibilities to enhance the miniaturization of metamaterial resonant particles are presented and discussed. By using two metal layers connected by vias, new compact topologies useful for the synthesis of metamaterials (including left handed structures) are proposed. A comparative analysis of the different topologies, in terms of size and unloaded quality factor is carried out, and relevant conclusions are inferred. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
