Amoco`s training initiative reduces wellsite drilling problems

A new educational tool developed by Amoco`s Technology and Training Team and titled Training to Reduce Unscheduled Events, or TRUE, focuses on about 70% of Amoco`s total unscheduled event time. Some items such as weather-related downtime are not explicitly addressed by TRUE, but the concepts taught should also help these categories. This paper illustrates several costly unscheduled event categories measured as percent of operations time. The events are ranked by frequency of occurrence. While courses addressing specific subjects such as stuck pipe and drillstring failures have been successful, the data made clear the need for a comprehensive training course to address the entire drilling operation. Amoco`s Technology and Training Team designed and implemented TRUE to achieve this objective.
