Developing research-based guidelines for improving access to small-screen displays

Abstract This is a report on the initial phase of an effort to develop research-based guidelines to improve accessibility of small-screen visual displays for persons who are visually impaired. Contrast modulation was measured in a test group of 12 home blood pressure monitors (HBPMs) that use small-screen visual displays. Next steps include obtaining subjects' contrast sensitivity using an interactive, software driven display and demonstrating techniques for measuring font size, luminance, glare, and hue. In the final phase of the project, a clinical study will be conducted to define optimal small-screen display parameters for visually impaired subjects.
