Do iconic gestures have a functional role in lexical access? An experimental study of the effects of repeating a verbal message on gesture production

Les As. proposent de tester d'une maniere experimentale l'hypothese de Butterworth et Hadar (1989) selon laquelle les gestes iconiques jouent un role fonctionnel dans l'acces lexical lors de la production de la parole. Dans cette optique, ils demandent a huit personnes de raconter une histoire plusieurs fois consecutives, afin d'obtenir un changement graduel entre un discours spontane, hesitant, avec une grande proportion de pauses, et un discours fluide, prepare, avec des constructions verbales deja pretes et des items lexicaux deja trouves et donc utilises sans difficultes. Contrairement a ce que prevoyait l'hypothese de Butterworth et Hadar, les resultats de l'experience n'indiquent aucune diminution significative de la frequence des gestes iconiques. Les As. en concluent que ces gestes iconiques doivent jouer un role en plus de leur possible role dans la recherche lexicale
