Design of sparse MIMO arrays for short range imaging applications

This paper presents the development of a sparse periodic array for short range imaging applications in the frequency range 75–90 GHz. The basis for the array design is the effective aperture approach, which is a farfield design procedure. For short target distances and a wide field of view the result of this concept is not satisfying. An extension of the sparse periodic array concept for short range applications on the basis of an optimized array design and an optimized beamforming algorithm is presented in this work.
