Examination of Brittle Fracture Criteria for Overlapping Mode I and Mode II Loading Applied to Cracks

In contrast to Mode I, no fully tried concepts exist as yet for reliably predicting the beginning of an instable growth of a crack exposed to Mixed Mode and Mode II stresses. Although a large number of fracture hypotheses exist, these partly lead to contradictory fracture predictions. The experimental investigations of the Mixed Mode problems, which have been carried out until now, have not been sufficient to obtain greater clarity. Additional experiments will therefore be required.
