The genus Fissidens in the Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe, Gulf of Guinea, West Africa

Abstract Fissidens, with 24 species, is the largest moss genus in the Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe. We report 21 species new for the Republic of which two are the first records for Africa. A key to Fissidens in the Republic is provided along with cited specimens examined, information on habitat, important diagnostic characters for recognition and distribution. The potential to discover additional species of Fissidens in the Republic is likely with continued exploration and specimen acquisition.
