Thyroid‐adrenocortical responses to anaesthesia in man

It is well established that anaesthesia and surgical operations produce a pituitary and adrenocortical response. However, the reports of the influence of operationl-6 or anaesthesia per se71 1 on the thyroid activity have been scant and conflicting. A reciprocal relationship between plasma thyroid hormone levels as reflected by the P B I ~ 3 1 (protein bound iodine) and plasma cortisol values has been shown to exist during operation under nitrous oxide-ether anaesthesia and after operation by Goldenberg, Hayes and Greene3. The present study was undertaken to explore the pattern of endocrine adjustment to diethyl ether and thiopentone anaesthesia without surgery.
