Like rest of the world, Pakistan is also facing the potential impacts of global warming causing an intense increase in temperature even in smaller cities of Pakistan. This climate change has become a threat to human health as it is directly responsible for dehydration which in turn causes chronic kidney diseases leading to loss of human life. In such circumstances, availability of chilled potable water has the same importance as that of nectar. To ensure the availability of chilled water, electrical water chillers have been installed at various public places across Pakistan. However, the unfortunate energy situation of Pakistan is troubling, resulting in periodic blackouts of electricity and making these water chillers to malfunction or underperform. In such a critical scenario, the development of renewable energy technologies is a vital tool for reducing the impacts of climate change. This paper, specifically deals with the design and implementation of solar energy based water chilling system. This research work presents a review of solar energy potential along with solar map of Pakistan. An electrical energy audit in the context of solar energy is conducted on selected buildings/departments. The Electrical Engineering Department Block of Rachna College of Engineering and Technology, Gujranwala being a learning place for students is selected for the implementation of this solar energy based water chilling system. The obtained results are then used to design an off grid solar energy based water chilling system. So, this paper not only presents a reliable solution to deal with the critical impacts of climate change in almost all major and minor cities of Pakistan but also encourages home appliances manufacturers in Pakistan to develop this product on commercial scale.
