Local implementation of quality, labour and environmental standards : opportunities for upgrading in the footwear industry

Analyses whether improving quality, labour and environmental conditions will improve developing countries' chances of upgrading industrially. Examines different types of value chain governance and levels of compliance with global standards in the footwear industry. Based on fieldwork carried out in the Sinos Valley in Brazil in 2000.
