Flowsheeting of solids processes for energy saving and pollution reduction

Abstract The usage of flowsheet simulation software in design and optimisation of fluid/gas processes is state of the art and has proven to be a valuable approach to achieve an optimum design of such a process. Due to the much higher complexity of the parameters and information structures required to characterise a solids process, the common flowsheeting tools are not suitable for simulation, design and optimisation of solids processes. A new flowsheeting system therefore has been developed at the TUHH with respect to the special requirements of these processes. The article describes the basic design of the system and the implementation of the required information structures. Furthermore a detailed description of the results obtained in an application for optimisation of an existing soil washing plant with respect to reduction of waste is given. Examples of possible applications of the system with respect to reduction of pollution and energy consumption are discussed.
