Experiments and modelling of natural gas combustion ignited by a pilot diesel fuel spray

Abstract Experiments and numerical simulations have been carried out in order to understand the combustion of natural gas (NG) under diesel cycle conditions. The study used a natural gas/air mixture with a pilot diesel fuel spray for ignition in a constant volume combustion chamber. The experiments were carried out under conditions as close as possible to those existing in a gas engine operating according to a diesel cycle. A three-dimensional (3D) numerical model incorporating complex interaction between the fuels during combustion was used. Simulation results compare well with the experiments. It was shown that NG combustion in diesel environments can be improved by using an injector with a great number of small holes and by increasing the injection pressure of the pilot diesel fuel, in this case to about 60 MPa.
