Investigation of Hydrodynamic Characteristics of Submarine Moving Close to the Sea Bottom with CFD Methods

The motion of a submarine near the sea bottom was paid much attention in the past few years.The RANS-based CFD methods are used to investigate the hyd rodynamic characteristics of the DARPA SUBOFF model (DTRC model 5470) moving nea r a level bottom in this paper.It is concluded that the bottom effects on the su bmarine hydrodynamics can be expressed in the linear formulae of the bottom clea rance parameter ζ2=DH,i.e.,the bottom effects are rather proportional to th e square of the inverse of the clearance H.The numerical study in this paper sho ws that the RANS-based CFD methods can be used as a practical tool to predict th e hydrodynamic forces of a maneuvering submarine at considerable high accuracy.
