Thermodynamic analysis of the interactions between Nb–Si alloy and molding material

Thermodynamic behavior of the interactions between niobium silicon and ZrO2 or Y2O3 molding materials was investigated. The effects of temperature and alloy compositions on the activity coefficient of each component in Nb–Si–Y and Nb–Si–Zr alloy system were investigated in detail. We found that the activity coefficient of each component increases with the increasing of temperature in both alloy systems. In addition, the activity coefficient of Nb, Y and Zr decreased with the increase of Si content which promotes the interface reaction. The presence of Y increases the activity coefficient of the solvent Nb largely, while the presence of Zr increases the activity coefficient of Nb slightly.
