SummaryAccording to preliminary results, straightening and tension state are factors influencing the operating behaviour of diskshaped tools. A clear and objective determination of these conditions has now been made possible by the newly developed devices RSK 4 and RSK 5. Measurements by these two devices are more accurate than those made by special operators and eliminate personal errors. Further advantages are their plain and rigid construction, easy operation by laborers, short control times, high operating security, and relatively low initial cost. RSK 4 (range of diameter: 250 to 1800 mm) permits mechanical recording of diagrams and with RSK 5 (range of diameter: 150 to 300 mm) the measuring values may be read at a dial indicator. The straightening and tension state is improved on the basis of the results obtained, and a statistical evaluation of the measurements provides standard values for the tension state. Damage due to improper handling of tools may be discovered.The possibility of determining the correct tension state for any operating condition, and to produce such a condition in advance with the aid of above control devices, is the first step towards mechanical tensioning.
