A novel large value ac capacitor using two dc capacitors

In power distribution system, reactive power compensation needed is usually of the order of hundreds of kVAR. For reactive power compensation, the conventional schemes reported are thyristor switched capacitor (TSC) and thyristor controlled inductor (TCI) [1]. As the var generated or absorbed in these schemes are directly proportional to the energy stored in capacitors and inductors, there is a considerable increase in the size of these elements when large var compensation is required. Shunt passive filters have traditionally been used to filter harmonics generated by nonlinear loads. A shunt passive filter effectively filters out the harmonic current for which it is tuned. For filtering several harmonics, different shunt passive filters are required. To overcome the limitations of TSC and TCI, pulse-width-modulated static var compensator (PWMSVC) [2] is used. To overcome the limitations of shunt passive filter, active power filter (APF) [3–17] is used. APFs are also used for reactive power compensation in addition to
