The effect of unemployment on disability caseloads in California

The hypothesis that competition for jobs is positively related to the likelihood that persons with legislatively defined disabilities will opt for public compensation is tested using aggregate time-series data from California. Results support the hypothesis. The implications of the findings for social policy are briefly discussed. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
