The “fluttering heart” and spatio-temporal characteristics of color processing—II Lateral interactions across the chromatic border

Abstract Two experiments are reported investigating the hypothesis that lateral interactions between the color processing mechanisms across the chromatic border are involved in the “fluttering heart” phenomenon. The fact that the effect can be destroyed by separating the colored target from the colored back-ground by a black line is compatible with this notion. The extent of the interaction (10′ and 35′, respectively) corresponds well with similar data in the literature. Estimating the extent of their interaction from a variation of the target width leads to the same result.
