TO THE EDITOR—As home to some of the world’s largest populations of humans, poultry, and swine and a hub of international commerce, southern China has been associated with human outbreaks of severe acute respiratory syndrome, highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza, and H7N9 avian influenza infections. Recent detections of human infections with the H10N8 [1] and H5N6 [2] avian influenza strains have caused considerable additional alarm. The origin and genetic diversity of these new viral threats are poorly understood.
