Analysis of Structural Characteristics and Control Approaches of Experimental Microgrid Systems

Microgrids are small low or medium voltage electric networks which utilize various distributed generators to serve local loads.A microgrid system can operate in grid-connected or islanded mode,and hence increase the reliability of energy supplies.This paper summarizes the microgrid research and development efforts currently happening around the world.According to their structural characteristics and control approaches,the existing microgrid laboratories and demonstration projects are classified and thoroughly analyzed.Based on the experience gained from some successful overseas microgrid laboratories and demonstration projects,guidance and suggestions for the future development of microgrids in China are proposed.
