This chapter considers the relationship between in-home and out-of- home activities and the effect of technological and social trends. Key features dividing the home- and non-home environment are identified. Trends in recreation, work, shopping and domestic work are examined. Changes in supply of activities and travel facilities are set against changes in demand in a changing population and the resulting behaviour discussed. 'Push' and 'pull' factors in the domestic environment are examined including tense or deprived conditions and the need for sensory stimulation and information. The possibility of an underlying need to travel is suggested. In outlining areas for research a multi- disciplinary approach is recommended. For the covering abstract see IRRD 863675.
