Reverse osmosis in homogeneous catalysis

Abstract Selectively permeable polyimide membranes have been used to separate soluble transition metal complexes from reaction mixtures by reverse osmosis. Adiponitrile solutions, obtained by hydrogenation of 1,4-dicyanobutene with RhCl(PPh3)3 and by hydrodimerization of acrylonitrile with RuCl3 complexes, have given 60 – 99% separations of the metal complexes. Similar results were obtained in the separation of cobalt and rhodium complexes from hydroformylation products of 1-pentene and of a palladium carboalkoxylation catalyst from ethyl hexanoate. The differential permeability of ligands and metal complexes has been used to synthesize new dinitrogen complexes of ruthenium. Reverse osmosis treatment of RuCl2(PPh3)4under N2 pressure led to separation of dissociated triphenylphosphine and isolation of Similarly, the diphenyltriazenide complex RuH(N3Ph2)(PPh3)3 gave RuH(N2) (N3Ph2) (PPh3)2.
