Characterization of pearlite grains in plain carbon steel by Barkhausen emission

Summary form only given. Barkhausen emission (BE) profiles from a series of pearlitic steel samples were obtained by using an established BE measurement system. Seven hypoeutectoid and hypereutectoid steel samples containing 0.08 to 1.16 wt.% carbon have been fully tempered to release built-in residual stresses. Specific transformation cooling rate was applied to each sample such that the grain size and fineness of the lamella pearlite structure were initialized. The large initial peak exhibited at the onset of the magnetization reversal in the BE profile revealed that domain nucleation was dominated during the magnetization process.
