Stator-flux-oriented control of PMSM in traction - Experimental results

Permanent-Magnet Synchronous Machines (PMSM) with their high power density are attractive for all kinds of propulsion systems. Typically, these applications demand high torque dynamics, caused by additional demands like cancellation of drive-train torsional oscillations, slip-slide control and electronic stability control. Indirect Stator-Quantities Control (ISC) has proven its excellent torque dynamics and high robustness applied to induction machines. Its industrial suitability has been verified in the challenging area of railway traction where high disturbances are common and a high fault tolerance is required. This paper presents experimental results of a stator-flux-oriented control for a PMSM at a 140-kW test bench. It is shown that the ISC concept can be adapted to the PMSM application with similar benefit.
