Samarinda Pengguna Smartphone Relationship Between Internet Addiction and Depression in SMA Negeri 3 Samarinda Students Smartphone Users

Internet addiction is a new problem on society especially in adolescence and usually associated with depression. The goal of this study was to investigate the correlation between internet addiction with depression on smartphone user of SMA Negeri 3 high school student. The present descriptive-analytic Jurnal Sains dan Kesehatan Hubungan Antara Internet Addiction dengan Depresi pada Siswa SMA Negeri 3 Samarinda Pengguna Smartphone J. Sains Kes. 2021. Vol 3. No 4. p-ISSN: 2303-0267, e-ISSN: 2407-6082 507 study with cross sectional method using a primary data involvimg 169 students (grade 1 and 2) who had been selected by simple random sampling technique. The instrument used on this study are internet addiction test (IAT) and children depression inventory (CDI). The results show majority of respondent are a teenage girl around 15 years old who has been using the internet for >5 years and Smartphone for > 6 hours per day, these students usually use internet to access social media such as Instagram, WhatsApp, etc. so that most of respondent are characterized as mild internet addiction and moderate depression. R-Product moment Pearson shows p-value 0,000 (p<0,05) with r 0,404. The conclusion of this study shows a significant correlation between internet addiction with depression on smatphone user of SMA 3 high school student, with a strong correlation and positive correlation direction which means the higher score of internet addiction the more depression will occurs.
