Multi-Objective Optimization of Machining Parameters during Dry Turning of 11SMn30 Free Cutting Steel Using Grey Relational Analysis

Abstract This study aims at investigating the influence of the machining parameters, such as cutting speed, feed and depth of cut on the output parameters (surface roughness and material removal rate) during dry turning operation of 11SMn30, free cutting steel. The tool used was WIDIA CNMG 120408-49-TN 2000 tool. L 27 orthogonal array design of experiments was adopted to carry out the experimental study at three different cutting speeds (80,160 and 240 m/min), feed rates (0.1, 0.2 and 0.4 mm/rev) and depth of cut (0.5, 1 and 1.5mm). Grey relational analysis was conducted to quantify the influence of the machining parameters on the output responses, and the optimum combination of these parameters was found out. The confirmation tests are conducted at optimum cutting conditions. The predicted results are found to be closer to experimental results.
