Adaptive PMD monitoring and compensation in optical fiber communications

Polarization mode dispersion (PMD) causes time and channel dependent pulse distortions in high-speed optical fiber communication systems and limits their transmission capacity. This paper describes an adaptive PMD monitoring and compensation scheme. A PMD online monitoring unit was designed and implemented. An asynchronous mechanism of high speed analog to digital conversion was proposed and realized high speed monitoring of degree of polarization (DOP). The technique of automatic gain control was adopted and expanded the subject power range of the input optical signal. The experiment results showed that the adaptive PMD compensation system could compensate 1st order and 2nd order PMD simultaneity. The adaptive range of input optical power was −16~0Bm.
