THE IRIS PROJECT

Beginning in the 1980s, rail traffic continuously increased and so did the speed of the trains themselves. The management of this increased rail traffic has also become more difficult, imposing the need to install systems capable of dependable performance in quality and high safety level. For each train under control, the traffic managers must know the specific characteristics and the exact position on the line and the speed at each moment; this information is necessary on a regular and ongoing basis, but in the case of circulation perturbations, its availability and accuracy in real time are vital for the rail system.
