Process Modelling of Forging with Heated Dies — Application to a Nickel-Base-Alloy

Summary A model to study the influence of different parameters such as velocity, time, temperature, stress, strain, friction, dimensions of the billet, billet and die material in hot die forging, has been implemented in order to reduce the number of experiments and finite element calculations. Calculation of the temperature distribution is based on a non-dimensional heat transfer analysis. The stresses and forces are calculated with the elementary equilibrium approach. The model has been experimentally verified and applied to a large spectrum of forging operations (conventional drop forging, hot die forging and isothermal forging). The model is designed to study the influence of the different parameters in order to optimize the forging process.
