Why does a mass on a spring sometimes misbehave

Autoparametric resonance of a mass on a spring was investigated. It is shown that when a spring is loaded so that it stretches to four-thirds of its original rest length, the spring frequency will be double the pendulum frequency and it will not be possible to excite a pure verticcal spring oscillation.
