Reading Acquisition and beyond: Decoding Includes Cognition

The definition of literacy is a tricky business, but it is important for the study of the development of reading skill. My intention in this paper is to discuss the importance of decoding in reading acquisition and beyond. There is good evidence to conclude that decoding is important to the development of reading skill. However, what this means in detail is an interesting question, and this is where the definition issue comes in. So, although my primary concern lies with the development of reading skill, I begin with some issues concerning the definition of literacy that affect how the development of reading skill is viewed.
