COMPARISON OF URBAN TRAFFIC PATTERNS BETWEEN DOMESTIC AND OVERSEAS CITIES

This paper classifies all the cities all over the world into A, B, C, D, and E patterns accord- ing to the trip structure. By comparing the develop- ment backgrounds, dynamics of the trip structure and pedestrian bicycle transport policies of the five traffic patterns, it examines the development direc- tions of traffic patterns for cities with different scales and different areas in a big city. It is concluded that China can not and should not follow the American pattern which is motorization oriented. And the pe- destrian/bicycle transport should be the dominant pattern for small and medium sized cities as well as a solution in big cities.
