Feasibility of ± 1000 kV Ultra HVDC in the Power Grid of China

According to the power system characteristics and ultra-high Voltage AC/DC system construction in China, this paper discusses the application and feasibility of ±1000kV ultra-high voltage DC (UHVDC) in the power grid of China. Based on the ability of industrial manufacture for UHVDC equipment, the basic scheme of UHVDC and economical advantages are analyzed. From different points of view, this paper analyzes the influence of UHVDC on the security and stability of power system, including UHVDC connection pattern, influence on the stability of both rectifier and inverter side AC system, and problems of multi-infeed HVDC. Finally, this paper recommends technological problems which need to be solved, and the prospect of the ±1 000 kV UHVDC application in China.
