Development of an EV simulator for estimating electric energy consumption using running resistances varying by location

To use electric vehicles (EVs) efficiently in transportation systems, it is necessary to estimate electric energy consumption accurately when place of departure and destination are given. Energy consumption varies according to the slope and surface condition of roads. Therefore, energy consumption differs from place to place, even when vehicles are driven at the same speed, making it difficult to project energy use accurately. This paper introduces an EV simulator that calculates electric energy consumption and proposes a method to obtain location-specific parameters from running on actual road. The slope angle and rolling resistance coefficient (RRC) of roads are estimated by subtracting the energy loss caused by other running resistances from drive motor output power when the vehicle runs on actual road to find the energy consumption due to the slope angle and rolling resistance. Experimentally, the accuracy of simulated energy consumption is improved by using parameters obtained from running on actual road.
